Aims and objectives: The reduction of neonatal mortality is imperative in order to achieve global child survival and neonatal standards. The leading causes of death in children below the age of 5 years remains as neonatal causes. Efforts over the past decades to prevent the primary causes of death in neonates such as prematurity, birth asphyxia, sepsis, and congenital diseases have greatly improved their outcomes. This was also expedited by the rapid developments in neonatal intensive care systems, as well as emerging specialized advanced and safe neonatal retrieval services. The specific need for specialized teams and equipment to ensure maximal safety, as wellas state-of-the-art neonatal critical care during transport has impelled establishing dedicated neonatal transport & retrieval services. Neonatal retrieval has drastically evolved & is now a pivotal component of neonatal – perinatal care, as well as being recognized as a specialty. Consensus guidelines and recommendations have also been developed on pediatric and neonatal emergency transport.
In this discussion we will review the current applications, standards and advances related to Neonatal Emergency Retrievals, and the vast services provided by specialized neonatal retrieval teams.
